    Mid-September, 2040 || Potion Lab

A pungent odor wafted around the small potions lab, making it stiflingly hot in the tiny room. The bubbling of a sea-green liquid in the cauldron was the only sound aside from Ben's soft muttering to himself. It had been hours since he'd eaten, nearly a day of no sleep, and his hair was a complete mess from his frantic fingers as his stress levels skyrocketed. He was on to something, he just knew it!

Frustrated, the raven-haired man wiped sweat from his furrowed brow. His hands gripped the wooden surface of the work table, knuckles whitening under the strain. If it was easy, everyone would do it, a small voice in his mind tried to rally his spirits. While true, it did nothing to help his current situation.

"It needs to be hotter!" he hissed at no one.

Letting his eyes close, he worked through the calculations once more. A normal flame for everyday use has gotten him nowhere. He'd spent the last hour figuring out how to add two more, thinking the combination of the three would allow the potion to boil high enough. But that did nothing, as his second batch reached the same result.

He would have to try for a third, but there was nothing else to do! More simple flames wouldn't cut it. He let his conscious wander, seeking answers. Zoning out, he didn't notice his temperature rise, sweat forming at the back of his neck that ran into his shirt collar.

It wasn't until he smelled wood burning that his eyes shot open, his hands having sunk an inch into the table.

    WHAT!?

Since moving out, she realized how lonely it could be and so she forced herself to be busy. So this morning she had found herself forcing herself to exercise by jogging. She wasn't the most athletic by any means, but she did enjoy anything that distracted her. From then on, her day involved some yoga, a stop at a bookstore and then doing some reading.

Rhian worked on Saturdays, thus as the sun began to lower, she found herself messily grabbing her things and heading to campus. Saturday was a perfect day to go on campus. Why? Simple, no one was on campus if they could help it. Most of those that dormed would go to the city in hopes of finding entertainment and others found any way to get out of the grounds.

The lack of people made her uncaring about her looks. A simple high ponytail to keep her hair back, and black pants with a black loose shirt seemed good enough. Turning towards the dungeon, she began to go towards the general potions room. There was an experimental salve she was working on for Healing. It was not for class, because she was not yet in those classes, but rather for her brother. Mycroft found it to be tweaked but it was missing something. Once his frustrations grew, he handed it to her and asked her to see what was wrong.

She was more than happy to. So as she pushed the door to the room, an awful stench hit her nose.

"Ugh" she complained, pinching her nose.

The smell was one thing, but as the smoke rose into the small room and it was unclear who was there she knew she needed to do something. Before she could even realize who it was, she in turn found herself throwing her things to the side and concentrating for Aguamenti to rise from her hands. Wandless magic was what she was working on with Winston so it was enough to explode water in the vicinity of the smoke.

"Is anyone there?" she coughed out as the smoke hit her lungs.

Before Ben had time enough to register what was happening, a torrent of water was dumped on him. Now, completely soaked, hair sticking down and clothes a complete mess, he squinted through the smoky haze surrounding him.

    "Holmes?"

His brain was too busy, stuck on the last few minutes, to properly register her. Even back at Hogwarts, she'd always appeared perfectly put together, every hair in its exact place. The perfect Pureblood lady, if he'd ever met one. Honestly, it was part of why he'd never given her a second thought. Robots, every last one of them; those who simply followed the status quo in all things. But standing before him now, she looked like a completely different person.

Something landed on his forearm, bare from having rolled his sleeves up while he worked. A hiss escaped him, "Shit." He rubbed the small drop away that had burned on contact, turning to the cauldron which was nearly spitting in its anger. He raised his wand to turn the three flames down which had caused it to boil over.

Still not hot enough, his mind supplied. He busied himself with cleaning out the slowly settling liquid. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be off practicing your curtsy's or something?" She'd done nothing to warrant the bite in his words - wrong place, wrong time. He couldn't be bothered to care at the moment.

Perhaps it was foolish to think that someone had simply left the cauldron on and forgot. But it could have been anyone else, but Benjamin Watson. She was embarrassed to see that he was there and she was in such a shabby state. For one thing she didn't have her face done, her hair was simply messily held up and she had a shirt that was twice her size and tight pants. It was unladylike but she figured no one important would notice.

'And he is unimportant too Tess, don't think he's got the upper hand'

She was a bit embarrassed for soaking him in water but she panicked. Water was always a safe haven and never as dangerous as fire. So she found herself awkwardly picking up her books and scroll as he busied himself with acting nonchalant.

"Hello" she said a bit meekly embarrassed at her rash actions.

Her awkwardness soon banished as she heard his next words: What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be off practicing your curtsy's or something?"

"Excuse me, but I never thought this was only for potioneer students and locked off to everyone else." she huffed. "And please, you look like you need to still learn some manners"

Despite this, her eyes trailed to the burn mark on his arm. Even as he cleaned up she found herself walking towards the ingredients pantry and pulling some items. She refused to even look at him as she took out the aloe, some wrapping, and honey. Once the paste was done and finally controlled her anger and grabbed the things.

"Come over here and sit, that burn looks nasty." her voice was a bit even, if a bit annoyed, it was poorly hidden.

The healer that she hoped to be one day would not allow her to simply ignore it. She knew from experience that burns that were not treated, especially hitting at high temperatures on the skin could have serious consequences.

Ben scoffed at her acerbic tone. "Manners are needed for dealing with people. Something I am not at all interested in." He was focused more on the blister forming quickly on his arm than the girl in front of him. It was acting quickly due to the ingredients, he knew, not necessarily the temperature of the potion. "And no, it's not only for Potion students. But I had hoped to work in privacy."

He'd come here on a Saturday for just that. When an idea had Ben in its grip, like this one did, other people were simply a distraction. Even Connor. And with the latest debacle at their flat, he hadn't dared do his work there.

Good thing, too, he thought. It just wouldn't do to have injured the other man as well. As it was, Ben's hands were a variable map of scars - sharp plants and botched experiments.

At Holmes's directive, he looked over at her with distrust. But if he was honest with himself, it would be difficult to put a bandage on one handed. If she was here, she may as well make herself useful, he figured. With his injured arm cradled in his left hand, he plopped down on the preferred stool, not caring how he appeared at the moment.

PostSubject: Re: Wholly Unexpected (Tess)   Wholly Unexpected (Tess) EmptySat Mar 10 2018, 19:53

No matter what Tess did, it seemed that the universe wished for her to have an unpleasant interaction with Ben Watson. Did potions make his world go round? Perhaps? She didn't take it personally when he said that he didn't do people; she thought she was the same type of girl until Rhian pointed it out that she at least should try. Since then, she's tried to hate people less, have an 'open heart', (whatever that meant), and do right by people.

And this was life throwing a challenge her way. So now as she mixed the salves on the mortar she waited for him to patiently accept her so graciously offered help. She leaned against the counter waiting for his consent.

"That looks like a bad chemical burn...and I might be useful" she hummed softly almost teasingly.

He was reluctant and distrustful; it was all the funnier when he looked like a drowned rat from the water. So as he sat down, like the petulant child that he was, she found herself walking towards him and putting the items down. Slipping on her gloves she stuck her hand out to ask him to hand it over. His long limbs dug into her own legs, so she tapped his knees to part them.

"Come on, the burn should not be pleasant. At this point I hope it didn't hit your mesoderm. Do hurry"

When it finally happened, she lightly touched his arm, and studied the deepness of the burn. Humming softly she shook her head as she moved to grab the disinfectant. She held his wrist tightly, knowing that as soon as the alcohol hit he would pull away, and perhaps hit her by accident.

    "Easy" she whispered.

Once it stopped bubbling showing the bacteria, she moved towards her salve.

"Now, this is a simple salve to calm the swelling and then we can properly move to see how deep it is. Right now the heat and the chemical mixture has created a bad sting. Hopefully nothing too bubbly once this is set" her voice was softer, reassuring. It was something she was taught at her first class when she had expressed dealing with patients was her biggest fear.

"Let me know if this stings okay?" slowly she began to apply the salve, hoping it worked.

The girl's comment had Ben's nose wrinkling. He knew a joke at his expense when he heard one. There were enough back at Hogwarts, and he was thankful for limited contact here so he wouldn't have to put up with it as much.

As she reached for his arm, he felt a light tap on his knee. He understood that she needed to be closer...but did she need to be that close? His eyes widened as she took his arm like it was nothing to touch him. He refused to think of how long it had been since he'd shared physical contact with someone other than Connor, when a soft scent hit him. Something floral, but not the sort of overpowering fragrances other women wear. No; it had give him the impression of the ocean, and falling flower petals.

He was pulled out of his thoughts with a searing pain. In a moment her words from a moment ago seemed to replay in his mind. All that technical jargon - where had she heard that? And why in the bloody hell was his arm on fire?!

Fire. His eyes - which were NOT watering from the pain - drifted quickly over to the wooden table. As he feared, two large hand marks were still embedded into the surface.

Focusing back on the girl in front of him, his eyes darted across her features as she worked, trying to ignore the sting. No makeup. Plain clothes. She hadn't planned to run into anyone either. His anger at her intrusion lessened only slightly. It was strange, however, seeing her without all the....Armor.

The salve touched his wound and he gritted his teeth for the few seconds that were the worse, his eyes closing to block out it all out. When they opened, he noticed she was still rubbing it into his skin. "Where'd you learn to do this?" The question came without his permission.

Healing always made her turn into a different person. Rhian would always make funny of her when she healed her. Even as young children after any injury (mostly Rhian doing reckless things) Tess would sit and heal her. The joke always was pushed that her heart would appear whe healing.

So five years later, there she was, healing an even bigger prat. She didn't even think about how they stood, with her between his legs and holding his arm tightly. Her biggest concern was the fact that the burn looked terrible. The only problem was simple: the silence was deafening. Despite her love of silence this seemed off.

So she found herself humming. It was a soft tune that she used when thinking or cleaning. Any task ended up with a simple song being hum. It was the question that came from him that caused her to look up from his burn. Her cheeks reddened a bit realizing how close their faces were but she would not show that she was inexperienced in this.

But it was when the question was replayed in her head that caused her to smile a bit shyly. A small breathy laugh was emitted before she explained.

"I'm a healer in training" it was simple and true. "But my brothers...they're always getting hurt. So I heal anyone that needs it" her voice trailed off a bit unsure and nervous.

It was a bit personal thing to express but it was true. Her brothers were accident prone and she was the most graceful of the bunch. So she healed.

"Does that hurt too badly?" her voice was not a whisper unsure why but it seemed right. Shyly she lifted her gaze to stare at the rude boy once more.

The humming was...unexpected, to say the least. A deer in headlights would have looked less out of their element than Ben at this point, his spine gone stiff with unease. It wasn't just her proximity, which was, if he was honest with himself - which he had no intention of being - doing funny things to his insides. But the soft tune emitting from the girl in front of him left him completely at a loss for what to do next.

In normal circumstances, Ben having gotten used to being patched up by Connor, he'd be roughly handled into submission, not willing to sit still long enough to be tended to properly. It was why many of his knicks and burns were so poorly healed.

But this...he could feel Tess's sure and steady, but gentle, hands moving over his arm, first with the burning hell of a liquid and then now with the soothing mixture she was rubbing into his skin. His eyes bounced back and forth quickly between her application and her face, still unsure of the why and the how of it all.

"Healer," he murmured softly under his breath, making a mental note. Not one to usually take interest in people he was not close with, Ben filed that bit away in his mind. Just in case, he reasoned. He'd gotten a bit lost in his own thoughts, watching her work, and responded a bit later than seemed applicable.

"No. It's...fine." His voice was hedged and unsure, quiet. His brow furrowed, not understanding why he wasn't making sense. That was rather annoying. "It's not the first. Won't be the last, I imagine." Everything was slower than it normally went. His mind, his words, his heart. Odd.

While Tess felt comfortable with..patients before, they tended to be non-sentient things such as enchanted dummies for school. The ones she used to hex upon during DADA were now being used to simulate birth, death, burns, hex victims, etc. In those moments when no talking was involved she found herself blossoming into her own person.

This wasn't potions, a field her brother thrived in. No this was her own little path, away from the potioneering and away from the ministry work. She was her own little sensible girl.

The only thing she admittedly struggled in was people. Actual living breathing people that chatted far too much or that cried too many crocodile tears. Those moments she felt lost and awkward, but now...now wasn't too bad. Perhaps because he wasn't the chatterbox and he wasn't pushy that made it okay.

But as their small talk grew a bit she smiled a bit shyly once done with the salve. He was sure that it would not be his last potion accident and she only hoped that it was true. Still, a heat emancipating from his hands did worry her. Oblivious to the markings behind her she moved to do the same with his hands adding lighter amounts of salve to cool down the hands.

"Hmm. I've been there but one little suggestion" her hands rested over his lightly as the salve was beginning to be properly soaked by his skin. "If you are getting more accidents you should probably go to the healer, you wouldn't want another scar like that one" her finger pointed to one by his elbow. "Just a thought"

Slowly a grin rose from her face before she pulled back. It was a weird thing to step back from such an intimate position, one that she hadn't even noticed was odd until she took a few steps back. Taking off the gloves she busied herself with cleaning. It was in the midst of wiping down the table that she noticed the markings and paused.

"Are..are these new?" she turned to look at him a bit unsure.

Ready to pull away, since the girl in front of him had covered his burn thoroughly enough, Ben was surprised when her hands moved to his own. Having relaxed just a fraction before, his senses were thrown into hyper drive.

Unlike his roommate, who was accustomed to fixing and working on things with his hands that could leave them a bit rougher, Ben valued his ability to take in information through his sense of touch. It could be the difference between identifying plants correctly, feeling if a powder was ground to the perfect consistency. Not one to really worry about image, he'd never thought about the texture of his own, really. But seeing the smaller pair gliding over his clearly larger ones, he was intrigued by the softness there. If his fingers twitched slightly here and there, gathering data of her skin against his own, he didn't let on.

She's said something, he tried to redirect himself. Seeing her gesture to the L-shaped scar running over his elbow, his mind cleared just a bit. "Actually, that wasn't an experiment." A small smile tugged at his lips. "My roommate was pulling a baking sheet out of the oven and I walked around the corner without looking." The other man loved to cook. Ben figured he was only as strong as he was physically because of this, really.

Caught up in his thoughts, he didn't realize the Holmes girl had moved away and made herself busy. Something in her voice alerted him, and his eyes grew wide, unsure what to say.

I don't know what happened. It just....there was nothing, and then there was something. The table was burning, but my hands are fine. I thought I may have imagined it. The internal monologue kept going as he simplified it. "I...um. I..." What?! He didn't stammer! Ben did a lot of things, but stammer was not one of them! He cleared his throat to try again.

"I don't know what happened." There. Words.

She tilted her head curiously at the idea of the handprints being ingrained in the table. The heat was slowly lessening, enough for her to put her smaller hands over the markings. It didn't take a genius to realize what was going on.

Her hands trailed slowly and gripped the table in a similar fashion to see how the marks were made. Slowly she turned her head to face Ben who looked a bit tongue tied.

"Did..did you cause this?" her voice was soft, unsure and somewhat in awe at what she was looking at.

Elemental magic was not necessarily unheard of. In her family there were spurts that happened before, but no one spoke about it anymore. It was an uneasy idea of being different. Different meant outcast and not fitting to the norms given to the world. Still she was not truly disgusted by the idea in fact she was intrigued.

The last thing Ben expected to see was something akin to intrigue on the girl's features. Disgust? Maybe. Fear? Understandable. But as she moved toward the table instead of away, his own head cocked to the side ever so slightly, interest in what she would do creeping into his mind.

He watched as she placed her small hands into the prints he left behind, his body tensed, bracing for her to pull back from the heat he was sure still radiated there. When she didn't, he relaxed a bit. Concern for others was not his strongest suit, but this was all so...new. He had no way of knowing what would happen. And that fact was more unnerving, that he was completely in the dark, than the idea that it had happened at all.

"It would appear so," his own voice continued as a hollow shell of his usual biting tone. He hadn't been this so thrown off center since...well, he didn't want to think about those days. Months. Years? Sometimes he didn't quite know how long he'd spent down that proverbial rabbit hole.

But this was nothing like that. He starred down at his own hands, which had cooled to their normal temperature, which ran warmer than most on a typical day. Something had happened. Something he couldn't explain. And until he could, he wasn't happy with the idea of a lot of people knowing.

"Can I rely on your discretion? This...whatever happened. No one can know."

He stood then, rolling down his sleeves to cover the burn. It would be fine for now, and he would have Connor apply some ointment if needed back at the flat. The burns would have to be fixed, all evidence eliminated.

Fire. If Tess was honest, fire was something she feared, for the mere reason that it was so chaotic, pain inducing and nothing like her. Her family always found peace by the sea, from her siblings fishing, to her swimming for countless of hours. Her family always were fond of elemental magic, and at a certain age a certain element would be chosen as their battle style. She had yet to find hers. But this was different; this was not elemental charms and spells. Her hands glided lightly over the markings as the steam rose, never harmful but her palms turned a bit pink. She was pulling back when she heard his comment.

"Can I rely on your discretion? This...whatever happened. No one can know."

Slowly turning around to face him, she leaned against the destroyed table and really looked at him. The sharp tongued rude boy was very much still there, but the wariness was impossible to hide. Sighing, she found herself nodding.

"Elemental magic should be hidden anyways" she commented softly. "There's no need to have something regulated."

Making a zipping motion, she sent a wink her way before beginning to pick up her things. Moving to have the salve go into a jar she grabbed her things before pushing the healing paste his way.

"Here you go...have your boyfriend clean it up for you. Once every eight hours" she looked a him a bit sternly before heading out.

She wouldn't have gotten any work done anyway. Perhaps a trip hope was the best option, after all she had a date tonight. As soon as she came she found herself having the door close behind her.
