When Tess had requested to move out on her own, her father had been very upset with her. In fact, he had walked away in the middle of her explanation much to her own frustration. Her brother Winston in turn kept ribbing her and making it worse than needed. And Mycroft...he was the one against her going off on her own. Being the baby meant a lot of things, but being the youngest and the only female, it brought more complications.

For one thing, they argued over the location. Her father wished for her to remain in Paris, only for her to shoot that down immediately. She could not logically portkey from one location to the other country every day as it affected her health. Then came Merrywind district which only had houses. She did not want to be there for one simple reason: Rhian could never visit. So when London came up, that had been the start of a long winded argument. Her father refused to allow her to move to a large city. She in turn argued that Mycroft lived in London and he was fine. That was a two week long argument until they agreed on a compromise: she would move out on her own in Wizarding London, if they chose the location.

A reluctant yes had sealed her fate. All she did was show up and put her personal items on a flat much too large for someone like her. Mycroft and their father had gone crazy with picking a lavished location. Mycroft was two blocks away much to her annoyance and Winston was three. She knew they had chosen this on purpose.

So the Saturday that she got the chance, she reached out to Rhian asking her to come over to help her unpack, to chat and to possibly make this large two bedroom place a little more lively.

A small pop sounded in the alley as Rhian Apparated a block away from the address on her small slip of parchment. Looking around with wide eyes, she let out a low whistle. She wasn't joking, even her inner voice was cowed into submission by the grandiose structures towering on either side of her. She was used to the tall buildings, townhouses were aplenty in Mistwick. But it was the construction, the style. The palpable smell of 'money'!

Tess would hate it. Not that her friend was insane enough to look down her nose at a comfortable life, but Rhian knew the other girl hated the strings that came attached to such living. Conformity. Expectations. Things Rhian was thankful not to have to deal with.

Settling the strap of her bag on her shoulder, Rhian set off in search of the lofts Tess noted as her new residence. Almost twenty minutes later - Where's that damned Puff when you need him! - she knocked on the perfectly polished door.

"Bugger" she murmured as she tumbled from the stool in which she stood on. Still, satisfied at the last picture on her wall she took a step back from what she was determined to finish before her friend came. Before her was a wall dedicated to the things she loved most in the world.

In the beginning there were pictures of her with her grand-mere, her brothers, and even one small one of her father. Yet in all of them a shy nervous smile or a serious expression was always on her face. It was not until fourteen that her true personality began to rise. And that one came from a small picture of two gangly teenagers by the Black Lake. Rhian and Tess, a small little duo who were so different that somehow it worked out.

From then on, her wall became adventures that they took. She had been smart enough to wait until her father was done inspecting the place that she found herself personalizing it. While it was gaudy, and loud and not like her, small trinkets here and there made it better.

A knock caught her attention and she found herself walking to the door peering through the peephole. It was a silly thing to be nervous, but this was not Paris, or Merrywind, this was London. But seeing the top of her friend's head she knew it was safe.

"Come in to my overly gaudy abode" she waved her hand dramatically signaling that she knew that the ridiculousness started.

Laughter more close to a bark sprang out of the smaller brunette at Tess's choice of greeting. "You aren't kidding! It took me twice as long to find the bloody place cause it's so ridiculously posh." Rhian couldn't help but effect a British accent on the last word, imitating the more upper-crust inflection.

Although, as she looked around at the walls of windows, overlooking the rest of the city, she had to admit....it was nice. She headed straight for the kitchen, setting her messenger-style bag on the counter, the worn leather soft to the touch from years of use. Opening the flap, she produced two bottles of wine, a red and a white, with as grand a flourish as she could without dropping them. Would be just my luck, to make a mess on the first day.

"I figured there was no better way to celebrate your liberation."

Rhian preferred Firewhiskey and the like in general. But if they were going to get anything done today, getting sloshed first thing was not the best of ideas.

"Now, put on some music and give me a task." Her eyes sparkled as she tried to lighten the mood as much as possible. It wasn't false, to be sure, as she was genuinely happy for her best friend. Sure, the situation wasn't perfect, but it was loads better than it could have been.

As Rhian laughed and entered, Tess found herself giggling along as well. It was ridiculous, her family was crazy and she wondered if they even realized how garish their style was. It was too big for one person, yet there she was wondering what to do with so much space.

"I figured there was no better way to celebrate your liberation."
Though, as Rhian took out wine bottles, a grin appeared on her face as she found herself really paying attention to the kitchen. Clapping her hands she found herself digging into one counter. Wait no, the wrong one. She paused.

    'Which one was it?

    "Ah"

Successfully she found herself taking out a bottle of Firewhiskey and sliding it over to her friend. "I prepared for your arrival!" she cooed as she opened up the bottle and took out two glasses. "I say let's take a shot and help me figure out how I can move these kitchen items so it makes sense."

She didn't cook, or clean. In fact she thought her father hired a maid to spy on her. So this was just a glorified independence. She was still under her father's sphere of influence, but at least it was out from under his thumb. Still, she turned on music and began to get to work.

If she was honest, she had a fondness for some muggle music. Her brother Winston had smuggled it in his teens. There was something about it that made it just touch your heart moreso than the classical things she grew up on.

"You know the best part about moving" she said after a half of hour or putting things away. "Is that you can sleep over if you ever want to get out of your fake grandparent's home. I know you like them" she hopped off the stool. "But if you ever want space or I don't know, get sloshed in London without being judged, you can always come over."

The Firewhiskey was a welcome site, and Rhian sent a wink at her best friend. "Of course you did." She was not about to turn down the liquid fire, so when Tess handed her a glass, she said a soft cheer and shot it back.

It clinked on the counter top - marble? Granite? - and Rhian rubbed her hands together, hearing the music begin to float through the giant loft. "Let's get started then!"

    *  *  *  *  *

The kitchen was quick work, once Rhian took over. Honestly. Who in the blazes needs two full dinner sets at our age! There had been some mention of 'casual' versus 'formal', but she couldn't tell much difference. They served just as well as plastic or paper would to do the job, she figured.

Humming softly to whatever song this was, she poured the last of the bottle into their glasses. So much for staying sober! Tess was right, though. This was the perfect place to relax without having to worry about the doting eyes of her caretakers. While they weren't idiots, she just felt bad about them seeing her as anything other than their perfect ward. They deserved that, with how kind they'd been to her through the years.

But! Now was not the time for that. She carried the glasses over to the living area, passing Tess hers as she sat next to the other girl on the floor. They'd just started sorting through the massive book collection that was piled in boxes practically to the ceiling.

"D'you know, Connor's got a bleeding girlfriend?" Rhian took another large gulp of the drink, not even feeling the burn anymore. Her vision was not so much swimming as waving to and fro now. A laugh escaped her. "It's absolutely absurd! Who would want to date that idiot? She must be barking mad." Setting her drink off to the side at a safe distance, she picked up a few books and put them on the correct piles.

For a girl like herself who prided herself in being independent and not "needing anybody" it was incredibly nice to have another body in her space. It seemed silly, but she had moved out for the freedom, only to be in a glass cage that made her miss interactions with people.

'Mixing wine and firewhiskey was a bad idea' She thought as she took another gulp of the burning alcohol and winced.

She stared out towards the busy street of wizarding London as Rhian went off to get Merlin knows what. But as a glass came her way she found herself taking in and turning over to take in a most curious sight: Rhian being jealous.

Her lovely, intelligent, friendly, outgoing friend was completely clueless when it came to her feelings. Tess truly believed that this was why they were friends. Both were great at denying things if they set their mind to it. So here as she sat ranting about Bailey and his supposed girlfriend she took her drink slowly, allowing her cheeks to warm up and her throat to tighten.

"Agh" she made a noise of disgust as it became a bit hard to swallow but was satisfied once it went down. "Hm..yes, whoever finds him pleasant must be" her eyes twinkled in mirth. "Have you met her yet? Is she pretty?"

Old school text. Potions. Potions. Medicine. Healing spells. Most of the books in Tess's collection were predictable. Ever since Rhian could remember, the girl had wanted to be a Healer. Maybe it had been different before she'd transferred to Hogwarts, but Rhian had no idea. It wasn't a surprise, then, that they'd only graduated a couple months ago and she already had a mass of books in preparation for the Academy.

Picking up another book, her eyebrows rose to see a Muggle work of fiction. She held it up at her friend, pulling a silly face that said, Oh really! A new pile! It wasn't a total shock, as the Muggleborn knew she'd had a bit of influence on the other girl. Not for the first time, she thanked her lucky stars she wouldn't have to go off to the next school without her.

At the obviously annoyed sound coming from the other brunette, Rhian giggled. She knew the Slytherin and Hufflepuff didn't quite get along. It always warmed her heart to see them try, for her. But even on their best days they were barely civil towards one another. Rhian did catch the little dig at her friendship with Connor and stuck her tongue out at Tess. The boy was like a brother: annoying, yet constant.

A sneer painted her face. "No. She's probably absolutely hideous," she murmured.

Minutes went by and she felt her mood dampen. If Connor could find love, maybe it wasn't a complete impossibility for her. "Who knows," she mused in a light tone, "maybe we'll find someone at the Academy. No more damned school boys who act like children." Really, that was probably the problem. That all the males at Hogwarts had been idiots and immature. It's why she'd never given them the time of day.

It really began to look like Rhian was doing a bunch of organizing and she merely was drinking. Tess smiled at the thought as the muggleborn began making stacks and stacks of different categories. Most of them were potion books, some medicinal books, and others...she blushed a bit as she was judged by the Shakespeare romance novels she had. If she was perfectly honest, there were some items that Winston smuggled in for her. She knew that her brother funded her curiosity.

"You keep that in the secret pile, full of the dirty trash novels" she winked before taking another drink.

Still as the girl continued to mull over her potential love being lost to some floozy, Tess stared at her smiling over how little the girl knew about her own infatuation. Humming softly.

"I don't know" she said in a sing song tone. "I think he's into short girls, probably like brunettes. Not damsels, he's definitely the damsel" she smirked.

Knowing Rhian? It was pretty clear that she would miss the point, but it was a source of enjoyment here. Still, curling into her couch, she found herself biting back a giggle and instead drinking more. Drinking fixed everything.

There was still a long ways to go on the organizing front, and they hadn't even touched Tess's wardrobe yet. But her heart just wasn't in it anymore, the silly thing falling into a bit of a sulk at the idea of one of her closest friends finding a happiness she hadn't even considered.

At this rate, she'd have a new person in her life. One that she'd have to get to know, have to try to open up to. She wasn't good at that. As it was, Connor had simply grown on her through the first few years, and Tess...well Tess was always the exception. Outside of them, Rhian didn't trust easily. Without meeting this mysterious girl she already hated her. Who was she to take a part of her life away, even in the smallest amount?

She waved a hand in front of her face, as if batting away a fly. "Nah. She's probably some tall, blonde floozy with too much hair and not enough brains. Probably falls all over him like that Ravenclaw pair during sixth year, remember? They were always getting caught snogging in some alcove or another."

Rhian didn't hate love, really she didn't. And in her increasingly drunk state, she didn't care to examine why she was so angry about it now.

Tipping back another mouthful of the liquid distraction, she abandoned the books and leaned back against the front of the couch, happy to stay sat on the floor. A great sigh escaped her. "This'll be our year, Holmes!" She was determined to speak it into truth. "We're going to find someone from that damned male species that isn't a complete neanderthal. Handsome, kind, courageous. Oh! Maybe dark and mysterious! Wouldn't that be exciting?"

Her brow creased then with concentration. Where could they go to meet men?

Tess shook her head and handed her best friend the bottle of firewhiskey. Who thought it was a good idea to mix wine and firewhiskey?! Making a face, she still drank the white wine without must complaint. Still watching her she shook her head as she pouted.

Connor was a sore spot for Rhian; it seems that despite growing up together, they failed to catch up on each other's signals. At least that's what Tess saw as she took both of them in. When she met Rhian at fourteen, the girl was clearly holding out for Connor (whether or not she realized it was another thing all together). So when boys came around and showed interest in the former Gryffindor she would find an excuse, and all were very frivolous critiques. And when Connor found a girl...well Rhian had a little black cloud over her head.

It was quite amusing. For that she was thankful that she never dealt with frivolous crushes, or love, or feelings for any other person that went beyond friendship. She was not built to love.

So as Rhian ranted about the floozy that dated Connor and her determination to find love, Tess shook her head.

"Speak for yourself. There is no man out there that I'd ever fall for. I swear on my love of dogs, that the day I find someone will be the day the world ends."

Yes. Maybe someone worldly. Well-read and engaging. A love of reading. Rhian was lost for a minute in her imaginings. She built him in her mind, this stranger who would finally pique her interest. Because, of course, that was the problem. No one had caught her eye in the way that it seemed most people their age experienced. She just needed to look harder.

She listened to Tess turn her nose up at it all. It wasn't news to Rhian; she knew she was the romantic out of the pair. Openly, at least. If those trashy novels, or the classic romances had anything to say, Tess had a hidden belief in love. It was simply buried farther down than most could find. Sadly, farther than most would take the time to look.

Her eyes drifted over to her best friend, gone mushy with drunk emotion. "Then, I'll happily be there with you on the day that it does, you silly Slytherin." Their houses meant little in the way of insults between the pair. Through the years they understood that they were the outliers. "I'm sure there's someone that could unfreeze that ol' heart of yours."

In truth, she really did believe in love. While her memories from before the magical world were all but fading, she did remember growing up with the Song's. Lavender and Atticus were as good an example of lasting love if there ever was one. Constantly doting on one another. Arguing, of course, but absolutely supportive of each other. They were perfect, and no one would ever convince Rhian any different.

Humming softly, she sipped what was now wine as she saw Rhian relax. Shaking her head she smiled softly. Rhian wanted love so badly, the funny thing was it would not be hard to find someone interested, it would be harder to find someone that could replace Connor.

It was hard to admit, but she did think he was good for Rhian. No matter how selfish Tess was...and she was a selfish person, she wanted her friend to be happy. Was it so hard for her to find someone? No she didn't think so.

"I'll set you up" her eyes brightened, and her smile grew. "I bet you want a blond. Because you love blonds. And cute. I can find you someone cute."

Tess had surprisingly a lot of male acquaintances. From forced meetings to see if someone was compatible with her, to classmates that she somehow got along with, it seemed easy enough to find someone for Rhian. It would be nice to see her happy.

"You'll find love Rhi" she smiled sincerely even if her gaze was a bit unfocused. "You are meant to have it."

Rhian almost choked on her drink, she was so stunned. Tess had spent hours, if not whole days worth of hours, going on about her family trying to set her up with possible suitors. Her first reaction was utter shock at the girl suggesting to do the same for her.

But....Maybe it won't be so terrible. After all, unlike Tess's situation with her family, Rhian didn't have to make powerful connections. It was just about connection. And Tess did know Rhian better than anyone, maybe even Connor.

Steeling her resolve, she decided to take a leap of faith. "Okay, then. I'll take that challenge. You can set me up with whoever you want to, but on one condition."

For this, she sprung up and plopped herself on the cushion behind her spot. As impossible as it was to imagine herself on a date with a stranger, what she was going to propose really would take a miracle. "You've gotta date too. Now, I can't help out with the setups, cause...you know, your family would kill me. But you have to agree to see some of the people they propose. If I do this, so do you!"

She was a bit more than worried the other girl would chicken out. Especially because Rhian hadn't the slightest idea how she would find a date without Tess's help.

When Tess had suggested her idea, there was a hint of malice behind it. But that was just who she was. Yet the idea of actually going on a date....she let out a groan.

If there was one thing she was bad at, it was dates. She had only known how to push people away per her grand-mere. Yet actually forcing herself to be...pleasant? She shuddered. Opening up the bottle of firewhiskey, she drank the last bite of the liquor before making he stupid decision.

"Fine" she mumbled. "I'll ask Winnie to set something up with people that might work. Who knows, I might find a suitable husband"

The idea was completely stupid and unlike her. But the firewhiskey definitely helped solidify her decision.
